The photo shows the first trash boom after installation. The first, upstream boom, will slow the water flow during storm events and enable the second trash boom, which can be seen with the orange buoys floating in the water prior to stretching and connecting it to the opposite bank of the waterway, to catch the remaining litter. The booms extend ~1ft under the surface, catching floating and semi-floating debris while enabling animals to pass below. The booms are attached to trees or non-permanent moveable posts on the banks of the outlet. A small deposit (10-15 cents) is added to the purchase price of a beverage and then refunded to the customer when the beverage container is returned for recycling. The deposit-return system creates a unique incentive to recycle, and keeping the beverage containers out of the rest of the recycling stream creates a cleaner, higher quality material more suited for recycling into more uses, including new bottles. Beverage containers make up about half of the litter we find in our cleanups. We think adding a refundable deposit would provide the right incentive to change behavior and dramatically reduce litter. These materials contaminate our streets and waterways and don't break down for centuries. This year's annual Waterfront Partnership Dumpster Dive, sponsored by our phenomenal partner, the Baltimore Waterfront Partnership, showed numbers of polystyrene decreased from 2,398 pieces in 2019 to just 214 this year! We worked with partners to ban plastic grocery style bags in Baltimore City and expect to see similar decreases. Let’s make these types of litter a sight of the past. More environmentally friendly options exist. Make your own cleaning products - Ditch the harmful chemical cleaners that can end up in our waterways and hurt the environment, instead of using those cleaners, which also come in a plastic bottle, make your own instead in a glass or reusable spray bottle out of vinegar and citrus. (Also many eco-friendly brands to shop from online!) Craft plastic free hygiene products - Oftentimes we buy hygiene products in plastic containers because there is a lack of better options. However, lots of hygiene products are easily craft-able! For example: make toothpaste by mixing coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oil in a bowl or make deodorant with the same ingredients and adding arrowroot starch. Use water straight out the tap - Instead of buying plastic bottles drink the water straight out of your tap instead. She used to play in a stream in the woods outside her house and continues to go to Bethany Beach almost every year. This is where her love for marine life began.
